It’s April 2021

and that means it’s Fake Journal time again!

Want to see what I’m doing this year? I’m posting on Skylark Karma, my dedicated fake journal blog containing all my fake journals from 2012 to the present.

This year my character’s using ink and watercolor in an A4 sketchbook not meant for wet media. Does she care? Not a bit. Join me as we see what piques her interest this month.

Here’s more information on what she’s going to use.

It’s going to be a great month!

Video – April Was Fake Journal Month

2020 was my ninth consecutive year of Fake Journaling ever since being tuned on to the process by artist, Roz Stendahl in 2012. She has since stopped her own participation but all the pertinent information is still available on her Official International Fake Journal Blog.

I have all nine years of my fake journals on my dedicated Fake Journal blog…
Skylark Karma.
( skylark karma(dot)wordpress(dot)com )
Each is written by a distinct character, some bearing similarities to me while others couldn’t be more different. This year my character is female. She’s married to Hank and they have two children. The daughter, Lise, is a college freshman and their son, Silas, or Sy for short, is a high school senior. The journal chronicles their daily activity during April 2020 as they adapt to various challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

I chose to draw and paint primarily food packaging and produce using Caran d’Ache Aquarelle watercolor pencils with journaling on the opposing pages.

Although I enjoy the daily process I confess my favorite part is making a short video slideshow to share. It’s nearly as good as letting you page through it yourself. You can always stop the video below to read the entries but it definitely would be easier to visit my fake journal blog and start here with April 1st.

Hope you enjoy this three minute escape into another life!

Remember, this is FAKE… no wrists were broken in the making of this journal.

Ack! April Snuck Up on Me!

Yup… it’s that time again.

April is International Fake Journal Month and although its creator Roz Stendahl will no longer be posting about it, that doesn’t mean I have to stop!

My ninth year. I’m probably more surprised at my commitment than anyone. Am I ready? Nope, but I’m starting anyway. I figure I have all month to discover who I am.

I’ll be posting on my dedicated Fake Journal blog, Skylark Karma so please follow along and we’ll find out together.

My 2019 Fake Journal Video

Again this April I participated in IFJM – International Fake Journal Month.

My eighth year… whew!

Not only do I love the process of creating the journal, I also love making these video flip-throughs… getting better photographs, picking the music, all of it… I only wish you could page through it yourself but this is the next best thing.

If this video doesn’t play you can also watch it through YouTube.

If this piques your interest be sure to check out the daily postings of my 2019 Fake Journal starting with this post on my dedicated Fake Journal Blog: SkylarkKarma.wordpress.com  … that way you can easily read my character’s daily current event haiku (haikus?) and see closeups of the images.

Hope to see you there!

Real April… Fake Journals

I may have been quiet here but I’ve been quite busy creating my April project, IFJM – International Fake Journal Month. I’ve been posting daily pages on my dedicated fake journal site, skylarkkarma.wordpress.com

The goal is to create a journal by taking on an alternate persona…2019 marks my eighth year.

This year was a tough one… earlier in the month I thought I lost my mojo but my stubborn persistence paid off and this evening I posted the final pages.

Please come see what my character “created”. Here’s the link to Day One and you can progress through all thirty days from there.

Stay tuned ’cause I’ll be back in a few days with what the “real” me did this month. April’s for much more than fakin’.

Done Fakin’ It ‘Till Next Year

April has come and gone and I’ve been finished with my Fake Journal for two weeks.  I took a lovely break, went on vacation, and am back with my wrap-up.

I’ll be posting the full wrap-up on Skylark Karma, my fake journal blog, but as I’m unable to share video there I’m going to post it here instead!

If this video doesn’t play you can also watch it through YouTube.

If this piques your interest be sure to check out the daily postings of my 2017 Fake Journal… that way you can easily read my character’s daily writings.

Hope to see you there!

IFJM and a Little Blog Housekeeping

I started blogging here near the end of 2013 and haven’t changed a thing on this site since then.

Well it’s about time!

If you’re a newish reader then you might not know I actually have a second blog where I keep all the “fake” journals I’ve created the last few years… well, they’re real journals, but each one has been kept by a persona I take on for the month of April.

April is International Fake Journal Month… IFJM for short. Roz Stendahl is the brains behind this activity and I wholeheartedly join in by adopting a character and journaling as this person, all the while posting images of this work daily, or nearly so.

I make references to this blog… Skylark Karma… when I lead up to April but ’till now I’ve never had a sidebar widget of my own.  When you’re on the home page you can see the image of a crow on the right; it’s done in gouache and marked up with my blog address. Just a simple click of the image and you’ll be whisked off to browse my current and former fake journals.

I had a great time creating this image.  First, I drew a rough outline on a prepainted acrylic background in my Pentalic Aqua Journal before going in with gouache.  There are passages where the line drawing shows through and others where the gouache is applied thick enough to hide and correct the misdrawn lines.

I love this full spread but a closeup of one of those faces would make a great image link. But which one? If I used the one on the left, he would be looking away from the body of this text.

… and it’s blurry, especially behind the eye.

But the crow on the right… that’s the one!

I love how the blues, greens and purples all combine to say – black.

I ran it through my photo processing software to add the lettering and… Voilà! … I have a permanent link to my Fake Journal blog.

Please visit and see who “I am” and what “I’ll be creating”.  The magic starts this Saturday, April 1st.  Join the fun!
